The appearance of the goddess to mortals in a vision, as depicted in Minoan iconography, particularly on seals. Her presence was invoked by prayers, hymns or ecstatic dancing, embracing baetyls or pulling the branches of sacred trees. In epiphany scenes, the goddess usually appears floating or descending from the sky, or receiving her worshippers’ prayers in a sacred enclosure, near an altar, a sacred tree or a baetyl. Her aniconic presence is also thought to be represented by certain symbols such as figure-of-eight shields, baetyls and columns or pillars.
