A baetyl is a natural rock, usually oval in shape, interpreted as an aniconic (non-representational) depiction or symbol of the deity in cult assemblages. In Minoan iconography, most often on signet rings, baetyls are depicted in scenes associated with the epiphany of the goddess and ecstatic cult. Scenes of a man or woman embracing a rock have been interpreted as an act of invocation of the goddess.
