The centaur is a mythical creature with the body of a horse and the head and torso of a man. The most famous mythological centaur was Chiron, the tutor and trainer of heroes in the military arts, hunting and music. In the iconography of the historical period, centaurs often appear in various artforms. A bronze figurine of the Archaic period from the sanctuary of Syme Viannos may depict Chiron, as many of the votive offerings at the sanctuary are associated with rites of passage in which youths had to prove their skills and apply what they had been taught in order to enter manhood.
