A solid cylinder of clay, stone, bone or metal, its surface decorated with incised themes and human or animal figures. It was used as a seal, rolled to leave an impression on raw clay. Imported cylinder seals from Syria and other parts of the Near East are found in Crete from the Early Bronze Age onwards, attesting to the close relations of Aegean communities with other East Mediterranean cultures.
