A term describing the symmetrical arrangement of facing pictorial themes. In the Creto-Mycenaean world, the heraldic placement of figures, often animals or hybrid creatures, flanking the goddess or the aniconic representation of the goddess or the ruler (e.g. an altar or column) is a convention that heightens the symbolism of the central figure.
