The kotyle is a type of drinking vessel with fine, often almost vertical walls, no rim and two horizontal handles. It was invented in Corinth at the end of the Geometric period and rapidly became very popular. Kotyles appeared in Crete in the Early Archaic period (c. 700-630 BC), and local potters soon began to create their own versions of the type.
