One-handled vessel with a narrow neck and deep mouth, used to store perfumed oils. They are mainly associated with women and athletes, as we see from pictorial scenes and assemblages. They have also been found as grave goods, perhaps containing oil for the laying out of the dead or for offerings. Lekythia from East Mediterranean sites were common Aegean imports. The white lekythoi of Classical times form a special category. Usually large, they were used to offer oil to the dead or as grave markers.
