A single hanging ornament with a suspension hole or loop, usually made of precious metal, stone or faience, or a combination of materials. Pendants may be bead-shaped or take the form of an object or figure, repoussé or carved in the round. Pendants of precious metal are representative examples of the skill of the artisans of Minoan Crete, as we see from the famous “bee pendant” from Malia, in which four different techniques have been used: filigree, granulation, repoussé and incision. Pendants were popular ornaments in every age, but many may also have been used as amulets to ward off evil, as indicated by the themes depicted and the fact that they were found as funerary offerings in tombs.
